Exciting discussions and successful networking in an online format

On February 26th, 2021, the third PhD Workshop took place under this year's title "SimFat - Large Scale Testing & Advanced Numerical Simulation in Fatigue and Fracture". The workshop continued a successfully introduced series, which is specifically designed for PhD students and held under the auspices of the German Steel Association (DASt). In 2020, a workshop on "FEM-Simulation im Bereich der Stabilität" was held at the University of Stuttgart, and in 2019 the focus was on composite structures under the title "FEM-Simulation im Stahlverbundbau" in Hannover. This year, the main topics were Fatigue and Fracture, and due to the Covid19 pandemic, the event was successfully carried out through an online workshop by the Chair of Steel, Lightweight and Composite Structures from Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

With a total of 14 contributions and almost 40 participants from German-speaking research institutes, the interest was very high. The focus was on sophisticated experimental investigations and advanced numerical simulations of fatigue-prone steel and composite structures. Topics such as numerical simulation of crack propagation, experimental determination of cyclic material properties and their implementation in numerical models, validation of numerical modeling by means of large-scale experimental results, and the implementation of numerical and experimental results in simplified verification procedures were focal points of the contributions and thus the core of the workshop discussions. The contributions of the event can be found here.

We would like to thank all participants for the successful outcome of the event.
